Leaked images and specs of Google's Pixel 2 suggest the search giant's upcoming flagship phone will have laser autofocus, 64GB base storage and IP68 certification.
The Pixel 2 is also expected to come with an 'always on display', according to 9to5Google sources, to keep the screen on even when the Pixel 2 is not in use; the original Pixel's ambient display meant the screen stayed off until a person tapped it or picked up the handset
To protect the source 9to5Google blurred the images of the Pixel 2, but they demonstrate that the phone has a design that is an evolution on its predecessor's aesthetics, and will come in grey and black colour options with the polarising glass panel that covers a third of the original Pixel's rear making a return.
The source behind the images reported that the Pixel 2 will have water and dust resistance rated to IP68; a feature that was notably lacking in the first-generation Pixel phones, despite many other phones released in the same period sporting the certification.
The leaked images also reveal two dots on the rear camera array of the handset, which indicates that the Pixel 2 will have a laser detection autofocus feature to improve upon the Pixel's impressive camera. Speaking of which, there are few extra details on the Pixel 2's camera, but the lack of a camera array bump on the back of the Pixel 2 indicates it still won't have optical image stabilisation, unlike other top Android smartphones.
Sources also told 9to5Google that the Pixel 2 will offer 64GB and 128GB options for on-board storage, and there's no hint in the leaked images to date that the Pixel 2 will have microSD slot to expand the storage.
Such images also keep the 3.5mm headphone jack out of sight, which opens up speculation to whether Google has followed Apple's iPhone 7 and dropped the analogue jack from its handset. A lack of a headphone jack could see Google improve the speakers of the Pixel 2, perhaps taking inspiration from HTC's Boomsound speakers given the original Pixel had large top and bottom bezels that could have held a beefier speaker array.
