Is Samsung already working on Android Oreo for the Galaxy S8?
Sep 10th 2017, 10:09, by Sean Keach

Samsung is already working on a custom version of Android Oreo for its latest flagship smartphones, apparently.

Google recently launched the final, official version of Android 8.0 Oreo, the latest iteration of the company's flagship mobile operating system. It ushers in a load of important updates, but it's only available on a select few phones for now.

Worse still, phone makers typically take months to prepare their versions of the official Google software, so you could be waiting an age to get it on your phone.

The good news, however, is that Samsung may already be working on a custom version of Android 8.0 Oreo for both the Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ (and probably the Galaxy S9, too). Those are two of Samsung's most powerful phones (coming in just behind the new Galaxy Note 8), and are widely regarded are some of the best Android handsets available right now.

This news comes courtesy of specialist blog Sammobile, which has a strong track record for Samsung-specific leaks. In a report, which cites "reliable sources", Sammobile details that the firmware versions of the Android 8.0 update for Samsung's flagships may be called G955FXXU1BQI1 and G950FXXU1BQI1.

The report doesn't detail a specific release date, but says that Samsung may soon initiate a "beta-testing program for early adopters, like it did for the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge".

Android 8.0 Oreo is a major software update, and introduces a number of useful features, including:

  • Autofill framework for logins and passwords
  • Battery life improvements (through background activity limiting)
  • Picture-in-picture mode for video
  • Notification dots
  • New emoji
  • Adaptive icons
  • Wider colour gamut for imaging apps

We'll do our best to keep you updated on the progress of Android 8.0 Oreo for most of the major smartphones.
