All existing Nokia smartphones built by HMD will get upgrade to the latest version of Google's mobile operating system: Android 8.0 Oreo.
Last year, Finnish company HMD announced it had paid to use the Nokia brand license, paving the way for a new raft of Android-powered Nokia smartphones. That dream has come to fruition and we now have a healthy roster of Nokia devices, including the recently launch Nokia 8 flagship.
The good news is that it turns out all of the new Nokia Android phones – Nokia 3, Nokia 5, Nokia 6, and Nokia 8 – will be getting an upgrade to Google's new mobile operating system.
The news was confirmed by HMD's Chief Product Officer Juho Sarvikas in a post to Twitter:
All of our smartphones will upgrade to Oreo, Nokia 3 included. No comments yet on timing so that I don't get into trouble .
The latest version of Android is Android 8.0 Oreo, which first released in developer preview back in March this year. The full software package went live to the public on August 21, offering users a host of useful upgrades on their Android smartphones.
For instance, there's now a picture-in-picture mode for YouTube, notification snoozing and notification batching via topic-based groups, and a faster start time from a powered-off state. Google also promised that the update would improve battery life by minimising the amount of background activity for infrequently used apps.
The bad news is that it's not exactly clear when Nokia will release the Oreo upgrade. Phone makers are often very slow to introduce new software packages, so we could still be waiting for many months.
