What is Apple AirPower? Wireless charging pad for iPhone, Apple Watch and AirPods revealed

AirPower wireless charging

Apple is finally enabling iPhone owners to charge their smartphones wirelessly.

The iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X will all be compatible with the Qi wireless standard.

Apple is also releasing its own AirPower wireless charging pad which will replenish a 2017 iPhone, an Apple Watch and AirPods earphones (via a new and improved wireless charging case).

Better still, it's capable of charging all three devices at once. This could be a great solution for travelers, or those with a mess of cables currently cluttering up their desk or bedside table.

Unfortunately, the AirPower wireless charging pad won't arrive until sometime in 2018, with Apple refusing to be drawn further on a potential release date.

Thankfully third party Qi wireless charging pads will enable iPhone 8 and iPhone X buyers to enjoy wireless charging in the meantime.

Apple is yet to reveal the price tag, but it's unlikely to be cheap.

Will AirPower work with my iPhone?

It seems obvious, but the AirPower charging pad will not work with previous generation iPhone or iPad models.

It's also incompatible with AirPods unless owners upgrade their case.

The new case isn't available yet, but it would appear AirPods will likely ship with it as an option for new purchasers. It's also likely to be available as a standalone accessory moving forward.
